A tragic incident occurred in the capital city of Kampala, Uganda, where a national army soldier named Wilson Sabiiti shot and killed the deputy minister for gender and labour, retired Colonel Charles Okello Engola.
Sabiiti was part of the minister’s security detail, having been assigned to the role a month prior to the incident. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear, but eyewitnesses reported seeing Sabiiti walking around the neighborhood and firing shots into the air before taking his own life.
An aide to the minister, Ronald Otim, was also injured during the shooting and is receiving treatment at a hospital in Kampala.
The speaker of Uganda’s parliament confirmed the minister’s death in a statement to MPs, expressing sadness and acknowledging that it was “God’s plan.”
