US President Joe Biden has announced his intent to nominate Julie Chung as Ambassador Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
She is currently the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the US Department of State.
Chung was previously Director of the Office of Japanese Affairs at the Department.
In a White House announcement on Tuesday, nine individuals including four career members of the Senior Foreign Service were nominated as new ambassadors.
If the US Senate confirms her appointment, Ms. Chung will be replacing the current Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz, who began her tenure as the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives on 1 November 2018.
