For the first time, the number of daily COVID-19 deaths surpassed 100 on Sunday (8), increasing total death toll of the country to 5222.
According to the press release issued by Department of Government Information, 111 COVID-19 deaths have reported on 8 August. Ninety of them were aged over 60 years while 21 of the age group 30 – 59 were succumbed to the virus.
With the alarming spike of COVID-19 deaths, the government requested the public not to go out unnecessarily as Delta variant is spreading rapidly. The government also appealed to the public to get their COVID-19 jabs without a delay.
Meanwhile, Prof. Suneth Agampodi at Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences of University of Rajarata recently warned that the number of daily COVID-19 deaths can increase to 150 following the next two weeks.
He urged the government to impose travel restrictions on full scale.
