Gary Anandasangaree, a Canadian politician of Sri Lankan descent, has achieved a significant milestone in his political career by being appointed as a Cabinet Minister in the Canadian Government.
The son of the former MP and Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) leader, Veerasingham Anandasangaree, Gary Anandasangaree emerged as one of the seven rookie MPs chosen to join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Cabinet during a major reshuffling on a Wednesday.
Gary Anandasangaree’s journey in Canadian politics began in 2015 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament representing the Toronto riding of Scarborough-Rouge Park.
Recently, he took the oath of office as the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, a role formerly held by Marc Miller. Prior to this appointment, Anandasangaree had served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministers of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Justice, and Heritage.
Having arrived in Canada with his mother in 1983, Anandasangaree holds academic degrees from Carleton University in Ottawa and Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.
His professional background includes managing a law firm in Scarborough, where he specialized in business, real estate, and international human rights law. Moreover, he represented Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada at the United Nations, advocating for human rights causes. Additionally, he has actively engaged with various Tamil community organizations.
Earlier this year, Gary Anandasangaree made headlines for his comments on Sri Lanka, referring to it as a “failed and bankrupt state.”
With his diverse background and extensive experience, Anandasangaree is poised to contribute significantly to the Canadian Government’s efforts in various areas of governance, particularly in matters concerning Crown-Indigenous relations.
