Selling price of 1kg of milk powder could go up to Rs. 1145, milk powder importers say.
During a programme of ‘Ada Derana’, member of the Milk Powder Importers’ Association Lakshman Weerasuriya said that 1kg of price is expected to be increased by Rs. 200.
Currently, the customers claim that there is a milk powder shortage in the country.
Weerasuriya said that the Cabinet paper regarding this will be tabled in the next Cabinet meeting and the shortage in local market would be solved by next week.
“About 300,000 tonnes of milk powder we (his company) imported are held at the Port right now. Now 1kg of milk powder prived as Rs. 954. That is calculated when 1 tonne of milk powder priced as USD 2800 (1kg = USD 2.80). At that time 1 USD was Rs. 183. But now 1 USD in Rs. 203. Unofficial buying rate of 1 USD is Rs. 238,” Weerasuriya explained.
We requested a price hike of Rs. 350 per 1kg of milk powder. The authorities agreed for a price hike of Rs. 200, he added.
