A tense situation has been erupted in Welikada Prison following a protest of death row inmates stated this evening (20).
Accordingly, two death row inmates have started the protest after climbing on the roof of the prison. After a while, 8 more prisoners were also started to support them. It is reported that all of them are death row inmates.
The inmates have launched the protest demanding for their sentence to be reduced.
In June, the death row inmates in Welikada and Mahara Prisons started a hunger strike which continued for several days. The death row prisoners went on a hunger strike demanding that their death penalty be commuted to life imprisonment after a presidential pardon was granted to Chierman of National Housing Development Authority Duminda Silva, who was serving a death sentence for assassinating Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra in 2011.
